SOE035 – Sam Browne’s Cavalry Risaldar | King & Country

SOE035 “Sam Browne’s Cavalry Risaldar” depicts a mounted officer of one of the most famous cavalry regiments of the British Indian Army.

Mounted on a fine chestnut mare, this junior commissioned officer leads his troop of cavalry onto the parade ground.

The regiment that became known as 22nd Sam Browne’s Cavalry (Frontier Force) was originally raised at Lahore in 1849 by Lieutenant Samuel J. Browne as the 2nd Punjab Irregular Cavalry.

It was one of five cavalry regiments specifically raised to patrol and police the often turbulent North-West Frontier of India.

During the following decades the regiment saw considerable action, including service during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, where it participated in operations connected with the Siege of Delhi and Relief of Lucknow.

During one of the regiment’s actions, its commander Samuel Browne was awarded the Victoria Cross.

The regiment later fought in the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878–1880 with the Kandahar Field Force and continued to serve throughout numerous frontier campaigns and skirmishes.

In 1904 it was officially renamed Sam Browne’s Cavalry in honour of its legendary founder.

King & Country depicts these mounted warriors as they would have appeared on parade in the years immediately before the First World War, making SOE035 a colourful and historically interesting addition to any British Empire or Indian Army collection.
