SOE038 “S.B.C. Mounted Lance Daffadar Bugler” portrays a specialist cavalryman of Sam Browne’s Cavalry carrying out one of the regiment’s most important communication roles.
The bugler was responsible for using his instrument to signal commands, routines and ceremonial calls to the mounted troops.
Before the development of modern radio communication, bugle calls were an essential way of transmitting instructions across a large body of men, particularly where the movement of horses, distance and battlefield noise made spoken commands difficult to hear.
The rank of Lance Daffadar belonged to the cavalry traditions of the Indian Army, and King & Country notes that related ranks continue to be used by the cavalry and armoured corps of the modern Indian and Pakistani armies.
Sam Browne’s Cavalry itself had an impressive history stretching back to 1849 and decades of service along the North-West Frontier.
King & Country portrays the regiment in the years before 1914, when colourful uniforms, fine horses, lances and ceremonial drill combined to make Indian cavalry regiments some of the most visually impressive units of the British Empire.
Mounted and carrying his lance, SOE038 adds both colour and an important specialist role to a larger Sam Browne’s Cavalry display.
Will be available from The Military Workshop.
