During the American Civil War (1861–1865), life for soldiers of both the Union and Confederate armies extended far beyond the battlefield. Much of their time was spent in temporary encampments, where men rested between marches, maintained their weapons, prepared meals and waited for orders that could send them into battle at a moment's notice.
These military camps were often established in open fields, wooded areas or near important roads and waterways. Conditions varied considerably, with soldiers relying on basic supplies, personal equipment and whatever comforts they could obtain. Wooden barrels, ammunition crates, rolled blankets and stacked muskets were familiar sights throughout these encampments.
One of the most recognisable staples of a Civil War soldier's diet was hardtack, a simple, hard biscuit made from flour and water. Packed into wooden crates marked "Army Bread", these biscuits were designed to withstand lengthy transportation and storage. Although notoriously difficult to eat, hardtack remained an essential ration for soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
The practice of stacking muskets together in a tripod formation was another familiar feature of camp life. Known as stacking arms, this allowed soldiers to safely store their weapons while resting, eating or attending to their daily duties.
