The Battle of Gingindlovu, fought on 2 April 1879, marked one of the turning points of the Anglo-Zulu War. Following the devastating defeat at Isandlwana and the lengthy siege of Eshowe, Lord Chelmsford assembled a powerful relief force to break through the Zulu lines and rescue the isolated British garrison. Among the experienced troops marching with the relief column was the 3rd Battalion, 60th King's Royal Rifle Corps, a regiment already renowned for its exceptional marksmanship and innovative light infantry tactics.

Unlike traditional line infantry, the King's Royal Rifles were trained to fight in open order, making use of cover and engaging enemy warriors with carefully aimed rifle fire. Their discipline and professionalism proved invaluable at Gingindlovu, where the British formed a defensive square that successfully resisted repeated Zulu assaults before advancing to relieve Eshowe. The victory restored confidence to British forces and demonstrated the effectiveness of disciplined infantry supported by artillery and Gatling guns.
