The Natal Native Horse was one of the most effective mounted units to serve during the Anglo-Zulu War. Recruited largely from experienced African horsemen, these troops possessed invaluable knowledge of the local countryside and excelled in reconnaissance, scouting and rapid communication. Their mobility enabled British commanders to gather intelligence, screen advancing columns and respond quickly to changing battlefield conditions.
During the march to relieve Eshowe, the Natal Native Horse performed a variety of essential duties while operating in dangerous territory where surprise attacks were always a possibility. Their courage and professionalism earned the respect of British officers, and historians increasingly recognise their contribution as an important factor in the success of the relief expedition. Although often overshadowed by the larger infantry formations, these mounted troops played a vital supporting role throughout the campaign.
