Alfred the Great rose from being the youngest of several brothers to become King of Wessex and one of the most important rulers of Anglo-Saxon England.
His reign was dominated by the struggle against Danish invasion and expansion. Faced with enormous military pressure, Alfred strengthened the defences of his kingdom, developed a network of fortified settlements and reorganised military arrangements that helped Wessex survive when other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms had fallen.
His importance extended well beyond the battlefield. Alfred encouraged education and scholarship and supported the translation of important works into Old English, helping create an intellectual revival during a period of great political and military upheaval.
