ACE-30 – Sopwith Triplane N533 “Black Maria”
The distinctive Sopwith Triplane gave Royal Naval Air Service pilots exceptional manoeuvrability and climbing performance when it appeared over the Western Front. Its three narrow wings made it instantly recognisable and helped inspire Germany’s later development of its own famous triplane fighters.
ACE-30 – Sopwith Triplane N533 “Black Maria” represents the aircraft associated with Canadian ace Raymond Collishaw and the famous Black Flight of No. 10 Naval Squadron.
The flight’s aircraft carried individual black-themed names, with Collishaw’s machine becoming known as Black Maria. Together, the pilots of Black Flight developed a formidable combat reputation.
Available from The Military Workshop – a striking John Jenkins Sopwith Triplane representing Raymond Collishaw and one of the most celebrated RNAS fighter formations of the Great War.
