AF031 – P-51 D-Day Mustang | King & Country
AF031 “P-51 D-Day Mustang” is an impressive limited-edition aircraft from King & Country, representing one of the most famous Allied fighters of the Second World War during the crucial period surrounding the D-Day landings of June 1944.
This model depicts a North American P-51D Mustang in natural metal finish, complete with the distinctive black-and-white invasion stripes applied to Allied aircraft before Operation Overlord. These bold identification markings were introduced to help Allied troops and anti-aircraft units quickly distinguish friendly aircraft during the enormous air operations supporting the invasion of Normandy.
The aircraft is finished with additional olive drab camouflage across the upper surfaces and represents a Mustang of the 375th Fighter Squadron, 361st Fighter Group, based at Bottisham Airfield near Cambridge, England, during the summer of 1944.
By this stage of the war, the P-51 Mustang had become one of the most important fighters in Allied service. Its combination of speed, range and performance made it particularly valuable for escorting bombers deep into enemy territory, while its versatility also saw Mustangs undertake fighter sweeps, ground-attack missions and support operations over occupied Europe.
In the weeks before and after D-Day, Allied fighter units played an enormous role in securing air superiority over the invasion area. Aircraft such as the Mustang patrolled the skies over France, attacked German transport and communications, escorted bombers and helped restrict the Luftwaffe’s ability to interfere with Allied forces establishing themselves in Normandy.
AF031 was King & Country’s second P-51D Mustang release and was produced as a strict Limited Edition of just 250 pieces worldwide. Now retired and sold out from King & Country, it is an especially appealing piece for collectors of Allied aircraft, D-Day subjects and limited-edition Warbirds.
