AF058 – Flying Tigers' Curtiss P40B Warhawk

Few fighter aircraft are as instantly recognisable as the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, especially when adorned with the famous shark-mouth nose art of the legendary Flying Tigers. Before the United States officially entered the Second World War, the American Volunteer Group (AVG), commanded by Claire Chennault, was formed to assist China in its desperate struggle against Japanese aggression.

Flying the rugged Curtiss P-40B, the Flying Tigers quickly earned an outstanding combat reputation. Although the P-40 could not out-turn the agile Japanese Zero, its speed in a dive, robust construction and heavy armament made it a formidable opponent when flown using Chennault's "dive and zoom" tactics. Between December 1941 and July 1942, the Flying Tigers claimed almost 300 enemy aircraft destroyed while becoming one of the most celebrated fighter units of the war.
