AG-14 – Germanic Warrior Woman | John Jenkins Designs
The Germanic tribes who opposed Roman expansion relied not only on their fighting men but also on the determination of the communities accompanying them. Women were responsible for supporting their warriors, caring for the wounded and defending the camps when battles threatened their families.
Roman accounts describe Germanic women encouraging their warriors during combat and, in desperate circumstances, taking up weapons themselves. They were particularly associated with the defence of wagon encampments, where families and possessions were concentrated.
Tacitus observed that Germanic peoples attributed special importance to women, sometimes regarding them as possessing sacred qualities and prophetic insight.
AG-14 – Germanic Warrior Woman by John Jenkins Designs portrays a female warrior raising a spear from which severed heads hang, creating a dramatic representation of the brutal nature of ancient tribal warfare.
This unusual figure forms part of the Germanic Warriors series within Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome and adds a striking element to displays of Rome's northern frontier.
