Archery provided medieval armies with the ability to weaken and disrupt an enemy before the opposing formations met in close combat. Within an Almoravid army, missile troops could support the spearmen and other infantry forming the main battle line.

Positioned behind or around a formation of spearmen, the archers can create a layered defensive arrangement, while several archer sets together can produce an impressive body of missile troops.
