AP-09B – Persian Sparabara Archers | John Jenkins Designs

During the Achaemenid Persian Empire, archers formed an important part of the infantry forces serving the Persian kings.

One of the most recognisable Persian military formations was the Sparabara, in which shield-bearing spearmen provided protection for the archers positioned behind them.

The large rectangular wicker shields carried by the front rank could be rested upon the ground, creating a defensive barrier against approaching enemy troops.

John Jenkins Designs explains that these formations were organised to combine the protection of the shields with the missile fire of the archers.

The method had similarities to earlier military formations employed by the Assyrians and Babylonians, whose infantry also combined shield-bearing soldiers with archers.

AP-09B – Persian Sparabara Archers by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure set depicting Persian archers wearing yellow caps.

One archer is shown with an arrow positioned upon his bowstring, preparing to fire, while the second has just released his arrow.

The two contrasting poses capture consecutive moments in the archery sequence.

Designed to complement the other Persian infantry and archers within the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this set is ideal for recreating a Persian Sparabara formation.
