AP-10BN – Persian Sparabara Archers | John Jenkins Designs
The Achaemenid Persian Empire, established during the 6th century BC, developed a powerful military organisation capable of maintaining control over an enormous territory.
One of the most distinctive formations within the Persian army was the Sparabara, a combination of shield-bearing spearmen and archers.
The name Sparabara is associated with the large wicker shields carried by the infantrymen positioned at the front of these formations.
According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, Persian infantry were organised into groups in which a shield-bearer could protect the archers positioned behind him.
The Persian formation is described as having a front rank of shield-bearers protecting nine ranks of archers.
These large wicker shields provided protection while the archers delivered volleys towards the approaching enemy.
AP-10BN – Persian Sparabara Archers by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set depicting Persian archers wearing distinctive yellow caps.
The figures are represented in kneeling positions, including archers who have just released their arrows.
The set is particularly effective when displayed behind the large wicker shields carried by the Persian Sparabara infantry.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, these archers are an excellent addition to a larger Persian infantry formation.
