AP-22B – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

The vast Achaemenid Persian Empire ruled over an extraordinary collection of territories, stretching from the Balkans and Egypt to the borders of India. Maintaining such an empire required a powerful military organisation capable of drawing upon the different fighting traditions of its many peoples.

During the 4th century BC, Persian armies increasingly faced the military challenge posed by the Greeks and, later, the formidable Macedonian army led by Alexander the Great.

Among the infantry serving within the Persian forces were the Kardakes, whose equipment and methods of fighting appear to have varied considerably. Some ancient writers compared them to Greek hoplites, while others described troops more closely resembling the lighter-armed peltasts.

These light infantrymen frequently relied upon javelins and lightweight shields, allowing them to move rapidly across the battlefield and engage opponents from a distance before withdrawing or repositioning.

AP-22B – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs portrays a Persian warrior charging forward in a colourful yellow and blue tunic, carrying a distinctive purple crescent-shaped shield.

The figure is captured in a running pose, armed with a javelin and an additional spare javelin, reflecting the traditional equipment associated with these mobile infantry troops.

The vibrant colours and dynamic stance make this figure particularly effective when displayed alongside other Kardake warriors, creating a larger Persian skirmishing force.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Achaemenid Persian Army collection, this miniature is ideal for recreating the great military confrontations between Persia, Greece and Macedonia.
