AP-23A – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

Throughout the Achaemenid Persian Empire (550–330 BC), the armies of the Great Kings incorporated a wide variety of soldiers, each bringing different weapons, equipment and fighting traditions to the battlefield.

Among these troops were the Kardakes, a formation whose precise military role continues to be debated by historians. Ancient sources suggest that Kardake soldiers could serve as both heavier infantry and more mobile light infantry, providing the Persian army with considerable flexibility.

Lightly equipped troops were particularly valuable when operating against the disciplined infantry formations of the Greek city-states and the Macedonian armies of Alexander the Great.

One of the distinctive weapons associated with Persian light infantry was the sagaris, a small axe with a narrow, penetrating head, traditionally associated with the Scythians and other peoples of the Persian world.

AP-23A – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Persian warrior wearing a striking orange and green tunic, carrying a red crescent-shaped shield.

The soldier is captured in a dramatic combat pose, raising his sagaris battle axe high above his head, ready to deliver a powerful downward blow against an approaching opponent.

The figure provides an excellent contrast to the javelin-armed Kardake infantrymen, allowing collectors to create a more varied and historically inspired Persian fighting force.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this miniature is an excellent addition to an ancient Persian battlefield or diorama depicting the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
