AP-23N – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

During the final centuries of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, the Persian army employed infantry formations drawn from many different regions and military traditions.

Among these soldiers were the Kardakes, whose origins and precise military responsibilities have been the subject of considerable historical discussion.

Ancient sources described the Kardakes as hoplites, slingers and peltasts, suggesting that they may have included several types of infantry rather than a single uniform military formation.

According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, Kardake soldiers could be armed with javelins, swords and the distinctive sagaris battle axe.

The sagaris was a bronze, pick-like weapon associated with the Saka peoples, while crescent-shaped wicker shields were similar in appearance to those carried by Greek peltasts.

AP-23N – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set incorporating two different colour variations of the Kardake warriors.

The set includes two soldiers wearing orange and green tunics with red shields, together with two wearing green and blue tunics with purple shields.

These warriors are armed with sagaris battle axes, raised in preparation for close-quarter fighting.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Achaemenid Persian Army collection, this set provides an excellent opportunity to assemble a varied group of Persian infantrymen.
