AP-24B – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

During the later years of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, the Persian army incorporated infantry formations equipped for a variety of battlefield roles.

Among these were the Kardakes, soldiers whose military responsibilities remain a subject of historical debate.

Some historians believe they represented foreign mercenaries, while others have suggested they were part of an attempt to develop Persian infantry influenced by Greek military practices.

The lighter-armed Kardakes are associated with javelins, wicker shields and close-combat weapons, including the distinctive sagaris battle axe.

John Jenkins Designs explains that the sagaris was a bronze, pick-like weapon originally associated with the Saka peoples.

AP-24B – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Persian warrior wearing a brown tunic with tan sleeves and carrying a green crescent-shaped shield.

The soldier advances with his sagaris battle axe raised, preparing to engage an approaching opponent.

This individual figure complements AP-24BN and the other Kardake infantry from the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection.
