AP-26B – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

During the later Achaemenid Persian Empire, the Kardakes formed part of the diverse military forces available to the Persian kings.

Their precise military role remains debated, with ancient accounts describing them as hoplites, slingers and peltasts.

Unlike heavily equipped soldiers fighting in tightly packed formations, the lighter infantry were associated with greater mobility and the use of weapons such as javelins and battle axes.

One of the distinctive weapons described in the John Jenkins Designs historical background is the sagaris, a bronze, pick-like axe that was originally associated with the Saka peoples.

The Kardakes also carried wicker shields, including crescent-shaped examples similar to those used by Greek light infantry.

AP-26B – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Persian warrior wearing a green tunic with blue sleeves and carrying a matching blue crescent-shaped shield.

The soldier is armed with a sagaris battle axe, held in a lowered position as he advances.

This individual figure complements the three-figure AP-26BN set and other Kardake infantry within the Achaemenid Persian Army collection.
