AP-27A – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

The Achaemenid Persian Empire maintained a military force drawn from the many different peoples and territories under its control.

During the later period of the empire, the Kardakes became associated with Persian infantry formations that incorporated a variety of weapons and fighting styles.

The precise role of these soldiers has been debated by historians. Ancient writers described them in several different ways, including as hoplites and lightly armed peltasts.

According to the historical information provided by John Jenkins Designs, the Greek writer Xenophon described Kardake infantry as using javelins, wicker shields and weapons such as the kopis sword or the sagaris battle axe.

Lightly equipped soldiers could operate ahead of heavier infantry formations, using their mobility and throwing weapons to engage the enemy.

AP-27A – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a single Persian warrior dressed in a yellow and blue tunic, carrying a distinctive purple crescent-shaped shield.

The soldier is armed with a javelin, raised in preparation for throwing, with additional javelins completing his equipment.

This individual figure complements the other Kardake light infantry releases, allowing collectors to expand their Persian fighting formations.
