AP-27AN – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

During the later years of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, the Persian army included a variety of infantry formations equipped for different battlefield roles.

Among these were the Kardakes, a group of soldiers whose exact origins and military responsibilities remain a subject of historical debate.

John Jenkins Designs explains that some historians have identified the Kardakes as foreign mercenaries, while others believe they represented an attempt to develop Persian infantry capable of fighting in a manner similar to Greek hoplites.

Ancient accounts describe Kardake soldiers serving as hoplites, slingers and peltasts, suggesting that their equipment and methods of fighting varied considerably.

Kardake light infantry were associated with javelins, swords, battle axes and wicker shields, providing the Persian army with troops capable of fighting in more mobile formations.

AP-27AN – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs is a three-figure set depicting Persian infantrymen wearing yellow and blue tunics and carrying distinctive purple crescent-shaped shields.

Each warrior is armed with javelins and is captured with a throwing weapon raised, preparing to engage an approaching enemy.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this set is ideal for assembling a larger formation of Persian light infantry.
