AP-27B – Kardake Light Infantry | John Jenkins Designs

During the final centuries of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (550–330 BC), the Persian military developed a diverse fighting force drawn from the many nations and territories under its control. Among the infantry formations associated with the later Persian armies were the Kardakes, troops whose exact origins, equipment and battlefield roles remain subjects of historical debate.

Some historians have described the Kardakes as mercenaries, while others believe they represented an attempt to develop Persian infantry capable of fighting in a manner similar to the heavily armed Greek hoplites. Ancient accounts describe them in several different roles, including heavy infantry and lightly equipped skirmishers.

The Kardake light infantry were particularly suited to mobile combat, using javelins, swords and axes alongside lightweight shields. Such troops could advance ahead of the main army, disrupt enemy formations and withdraw before becoming engaged in prolonged close-quarter fighting.

AP-27B – Kardake Light Infantry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Persian infantryman dressed in a distinctive green and red tunic, carrying a red crescent-shaped shield.

The warrior is captured in a dynamic fighting stance, with his javelin raised and ready to throw, while two additional javelins complete his equipment. His pose reflects the mobility and versatility of the light infantry serving within the Persian army.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this figure is an excellent addition to displays depicting the Persian armies during their conflicts with the Greek city-states and the Macedonian forces of Alexander the Great.
