As the Achaemenid Persian Empire encountered increasingly disciplined Greek armies, its commanders recognised the need to develop infantry capable of meeting hoplite tactics on more equal terms. The result was the introduction of the Kardakes, troops believed to have combined traditional Persian military methods with elements inspired by Greek warfare. Although historians continue to debate their exact role and equipment, they undoubtedly formed an important part of Persia's later military reforms.

The Kardakes fought during the final decades of the Persian Empire, including the campaigns against Alexander the Great, where they faced the relentless advance of the Macedonian phalanx. Their service represents one of the last major attempts by Persia to modernise its armies before the empire's eventual fall.

This four-figure set captures the individuality of these fascinating warriors through varied poses, historically inspired equipment and exceptional sculptural detail.
