AP-37YBN – Persian Kardake Infantry (8-Piece Set)

Build an impressive Persian battle line with AP-37YBN – Persian Kardake Infantry, an eight-piece set inspired by one of the ancient world's greatest works of art—the famous Alexander Mosaic. Available from The Military Workshop, this set brings to life the diverse infantry of the Achaemenid Empire.

The figures are based on soldiers depicted in the mosaic, where some warriors carry plain bronze Greek-style shields while others display richly painted Persian designs. The distinctive yellow-hooded soldiers have generated considerable debate among historians. Many believe they represent ethnic Persians, while others suggest they were troops of non-Persian origin who had earned the privileged legal status of Persian bondsmen through military service.

If this interpretation is correct, these soldiers would have enjoyed benefits including exemption from taxation and the protection of Persian law. The yellow hood may therefore have served as a visible symbol of this honoured status. By contrast, it has been proposed that the white-hooded troops depicted alongside them represented soldiers of non-Iranian origin serving within the Persian Army.

This eight-piece set beautifully reflects the diversity of the Achaemenid military and makes an outstanding centrepiece for displays depicting the campaigns of Alexander the Great or the armies of Darius III.
