AP-70A – Persian Heavy Cavalry | John Jenkins Designs

The cavalry of the Achaemenid Persian Empire was renowned for the variety of its troops and the different fighting traditions brought together from across the Persian territories.

During the 6th and early 5th centuries BC, Persian horsemen were primarily employed as light cavalry, commonly carrying bows and javelins.

Over time, however, the demands of fighting against heavily armed Greek soldiers encouraged the development of cavalry equipped for more direct combat.

By the later 5th century BC, Persian horsemen were increasingly using spears known as palta, which could be employed either as throwing weapons or for thrusting during mounted engagements.

The development of Persian cavalry continued during the wars against Alexander the Great, whose Macedonian horsemen employed longer thrusting spears.

AP-70A – Persian Heavy Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Persian mounted warrior representing the cavalry formations of the Achaemenid Empire.

The figure wears a distinctive yellow tunic and rides a horse with a red blanket, providing an alternative colour variation to AP-70B.

This miniature complements the other Persian cavalry figures in the John Jenkins Designs range, allowing collectors to assemble a larger mounted contingent.

An excellent addition to a historical display depicting the armies of Ancient Persia and their confrontations with the Greek and Macedonian forces.
