On the crowded wooden flight deck of a WWII aircraft carrier, fire was one of the greatest dangers of all. Aircraft packed with aviation fuel and ammunition could turn even a small accident into a major emergency within seconds.
The men responsible for tackling these fires were sometimes known as “Hot Papas”, instantly recognisable in their specialised protective clothing.
