BTMRR-02 – Roman Warship Steersmen | John Jenkins Designs
The rise of Roman naval power was a decisive development during the Punic Wars, when the Roman Republic challenged Carthage for control of the western Mediterranean.
At the beginning of the First Punic War in 264 BC, Carthage possessed the more experienced navy. Rome, traditionally a land-based military power, responded by constructing fleets of warships and developing the skills necessary to confront its maritime rival.
Ancient warships were propelled by banks of oars, supported by sails when conditions permitted. Steering was controlled by large steering oars positioned towards the stern, requiring experienced crewmen to maintain the vessel's direction during manoeuvres and combat.
The ability to control a warship was particularly important during naval engagements, when a captain might attempt to ram an enemy vessel, avoid an attack or bring his marines close enough to board.
BTMRR-02 – Roman Warship Steersmen by John Jenkins Designs is a four-piece set representing the crewmen responsible for steering a Roman warship.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic series, this set provides an essential detail for collectors recreating Roman naval operations during the Punic Wars.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
