CS5V-02 – Captain John Avis – 5th Virginia Regiment

John Avis is particularly remembered in American history for his connection with John Brown, the abolitionist captured following the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry.

As a militia officer, Avis was associated with guarding Brown during his imprisonment at Charles Town. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he served as an officer in the 5th Virginia Infantry.
