Long before firearms transformed warfare, a skilled slinger could send a projectile towards an enemy with remarkable range and force.

The Balearic Islanders became especially famous for their expertise with the sling, and Balearic mercenaries served extensively in Carthaginian armies during the Punic Wars. They were valuable skirmishers, operating ahead of heavier infantry and disrupting enemy formations before the main battle lines met.
