CTSM-02B – Samnite Warrior | John Jenkins Designs
Long before Rome became the dominant power of the Italian Peninsula, its expansion was fiercely resisted by the Samnites, a confederation of Italic peoples inhabiting the rugged mountainous regions of south-central Italy.
The Samnites were experienced warriors who proved formidable opponents of the early Roman Republic. Their resistance resulted in a series of conflicts known as the Samnite Wars (343–290 BC), during which Rome struggled to establish control over central and southern Italy.
One of the most famous Samnite victories occurred at the Battle of the Caudine Forks in 321 BC, when a Roman army was trapped in a narrow mountain pass and forced to surrender. The defeat became one of the most humiliating episodes in early Roman military history.
Samnite warriors were equipped with a variety of weapons, including short spears, javelins and swords, together with oval or round shields. Many wore distinctive bronze breastplates, particularly the characteristic triple-disc cuirass, which provided protection while allowing considerable freedom of movement.
Unlike the more uniform appearance often associated with later Roman soldiers, Samnite warriors frequently wore brightly coloured tunics and individually decorated military equipment.
CTSM-02B – Samnite Warrior by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Samnite infantryman wearing a distinctive blue tunic, advancing with his spear pointed forward at shoulder height while carrying his shield.
The warrior's determined stance captures the moment before an engagement, as he prepares to confront an approaching enemy formation.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome – The Samnites collection, this figure is ideal for recreating the early conflicts between the Roman Republic and the Samnite peoples.
Combined with other Samnite warriors, this miniature allows collectors to create a historically inspired battle formation from one of the most important periods in the development of the Roman Army.
