CTSM-02N – Samnite Warriors | John Jenkins Designs

During the early centuries of the Roman Republic, the Samnites occupied the mountainous regions of central and southern Italy and were among Rome's most formidable military opponents.

The Samnite peoples formed a confederation of four principal tribes: the Pentri, Caudini, Hirpini and Caraceni.

Between 343 and 272 BC, their prolonged conflicts with Rome played an important part in the development of Roman military organisation.

The Samnites were especially experienced in mobile warfare, using their knowledge of difficult terrain to challenge the advancing Roman armies.

According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, the Samnites employed a loose phalanx formation that was better suited to their mountainous homeland than the more rigid formations traditionally associated with Greek warfare.

Samnite infantrymen carried javelins and short spears, together with a variety of round and oval shields. Many wore distinctive bronze breastplates, while their tunics were often brightly coloured and decorated.

CTSM-02N – Samnite Warriors by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set featuring two soldiers wearing red tunics and two dressed in blue tunics.

The warriors are depicted advancing with their spears pointed forward at shoulder height, while carrying shields for protection.

Their coordinated fighting positions make this set particularly suitable for recreating a formation of Samnite infantry advancing against an opposing Roman force.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, these figures complement the other Samnite warriors and early Roman soldiers in the range.
