CTSM-05N – Samnite Warriors | John Jenkins Designs

During the early centuries of the Roman Republic, the Samnites were among Rome's most determined and formidable opponents.

The Samnites inhabited the mountainous regions of central and southern Italy and belonged to a wider group of Italic peoples known as the Oscans. Their confederation consisted of four principal tribes: the Pentri, Caudini, Hirpini and Caraceni.

Between 343 and 272 BC, the Samnites fought a series of wars against Rome that would have a profound influence upon the development of Roman military tactics.

Unlike the more rigid Greek-style phalanx, the Samnites were experienced in mobile warfare and mountain ambushes. Their fighting methods were particularly effective in the rugged terrain of the central Italian peninsula.

Samnite warriors were recognised for their brightly coloured tunics, distinctive shields and varied military equipment. Their weapons included javelins and short spears, while many soldiers wore an Italian-style bronze cuirass, including the characteristic triple-disc breastplate.

CTSM-05N – Samnite Warriors by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set featuring two warriors wearing light blue tunics and two dressed in tan tunics.

The figures are depicted advancing with their spears raised above their shoulders, preparing to deliver downward thrusts. Each warrior carries a decorated shield.

The contrasting uniform colours provide an excellent representation of the variety of clothing associated with Samnite infantry.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this set is ideal for assembling a larger Samnite fighting formation to display alongside other warriors from the range or opposing Roman infantry.
