The rise of Rome was far from inevitable. Standing in its path were the proud tribes of Samnium, whose warriors repeatedly demonstrated that determination and skill could overcome even the disciplined armies of the Republic. Fighting across steep mountain passes, forests and rocky valleys, the Samnites perfected a style of warfare that exploited both the terrain and their own remarkable mobility.

The prolonged conflict between Rome and the Samnites shaped the future of the ancient world. Roman commanders were forced to abandon outdated tactics and develop the more flexible manipular legion, a military innovation that would eventually conquer much of Europe and the Mediterranean. In many respects, the Samnites helped forge the army that later defeated them.
