CW17-01 - 17th Light Dragoons Officer | John Jenkins Designs

This mounted officer represents the British 17th Light Dragoons during the American War of Independence, particularly their service in the Southern Campaign and the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781.

The 17th Light Dragoons were formed in 1759 and arrived in Boston in 1775 as the conflict with the American colonies developed into full-scale war.

A detachment subsequently served with British forces in the Carolinas, accompanying Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton's mounted troops during operations against the Continental Army.

Unlike the Loyalist British Legion cavalry, which wore green coats, the 17th Light Dragoons retained their traditional scarlet uniforms.

The regiment participated at Cowpens as part of Tarleton's cavalry force and was noted for withdrawing in good order despite the overall British defeat.

Mounted officers were responsible for directing their troops, maintaining organisation and responding to rapidly changing circumstances during cavalry operations.

CW17-01 provides the command figure for a British 17th Light Dragoons formation and can be displayed with the musician and mounted troopers to recreate the regiment's participation in the Battle of Cowpens.
