CW17-02 - 17th Light Dragoons Musician | John Jenkins Designs

This mounted musician represents the British 17th Light Dragoons during the American War of Independence and the Southern Campaign leading to the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781.

Military musicians performed important duties within eighteenth-century cavalry regiments, helping communicate signals and support the organisation of mounted troops during movement and military operations.

The 17th Light Dragoons were originally raised in 1759 and were sent to North America in 1775. A detachment subsequently served under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton during the British campaign in the Carolinas.

The regiment fought alongside Tarleton's British Legion, although its regular soldiers retained their scarlet uniforms rather than adopting the green coats associated with the Loyalist cavalry.

At Cowpens on 17 January 1781, the British cavalry opposed the American mounted forces commanded by Colonel William Washington.

Although the battle resulted in a British defeat, the 17th Light Dragoons were noted for withdrawing in good order.

This mounted musician provides an important supporting figure for a complete cavalry formation and pairs particularly well with CW17-01 Officer and the regiment's mounted troopers.
