CW17-04 - 17th Light Dragoon Trooper | John Jenkins Designs
This mounted trooper represents a soldier of the British 17th Light Dragoons during the Southern Campaign of the American War of Independence.
The regiment was raised in 1759 and arrived in Boston in 1775 as the conflict between Britain and its American colonies intensified.
A relatively small detachment of the 17th Light Dragoons later accompanied British forces operating in the Carolinas under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton.
These regular British cavalrymen served alongside the British Legion, although the 17th Light Dragoons remained distinguishable by their scarlet uniforms, in contrast to the Legion's green coats.
At the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781, the regiment formed part of the British mounted force facing Brigadier General Daniel Morgan's American army.
Although the battle ended in defeat for the British, the 17th Light Dragoons were reported to have been the only cavalry unit to leave the battlefield in good order.
CW17-04 adds another mounted soldier to this historically important regiment and can be combined with the officer, musician and other troopers to create a larger British cavalry display.
