CW17-06 - 17th Light Dragoon Trooper | John Jenkins Designs
This mounted figure depicts a trooper of the British 17th Light Dragoons during the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781, an important engagement of the American War of Independence.
The cavalryman is shown with his sword directed downwards to the right, providing a distinctive combat pose for a mounted British formation.
The 17th Light Dragoons were originally formed in 1759 and were sent to Boston in 1775 as tensions between Britain and the American colonies developed into open conflict.
A detachment of the regiment later served in the Southern Campaign under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, alongside the green-coated cavalry of the British Legion.
Unlike Tarleton's Loyalist cavalrymen, the 17th Light Dragoons retained their traditional scarlet coats, helping distinguish the regular British soldiers from their provincial counterparts.
Approximately one hundred members of the regiment participated at Cowpens, and the 17th Light Dragoons were noted for withdrawing from the battlefield in good order despite the British defeat.
CW17-06 is an excellent addition to a British cavalry formation and complements the other 17th Light Dragoon figures.
