CWBL-06 - British Legion Trooper | John Jenkins Designs
Representing a mounted soldier of the British Legion, this figure depicts one of Tarleton's Raiders during the American War of Independence and the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781.
The British Legion was formed in 1778 as a mixed force of Loyalist infantry, cavalry and artillery, giving it the flexibility to operate independently during British campaigns.
Its mounted troops became closely associated with Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, whose aggressive cavalry operations played an important role in the British Southern Campaign.
The Legion's cavalry carried out scouting duties, mounted patrols, pursuit operations and attacks against opposing formations. Their mobility gave British commanders a valuable means of operating across the countryside.
At Cowpens on 17 January 1781, Tarleton's force confronted Brigadier General Daniel Morgan's American army, which included Continental infantry, militia and cavalry under Colonel William Washington.
The battle resulted in a major American victory, significantly weakening British forces operating in South Carolina.
CWBL-06 provides an additional mounted trooper for recreating Tarleton's cavalry and can be combined with the other British Legion figures in the Cowpens collection.
