CWBL-07 - British Legion Trooper | John Jenkins Designs
This individually mounted trooper represents the British Legion cavalry, commonly known as Tarleton's Raiders, during the American War of Independence.
The British Legion was a Loyalist military formation composed of infantry, cavalry and artillery. Established in 1778, it became closely associated with Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton during the Southern Campaign in the Carolinas.
The regiment's green uniforms distinguished its soldiers from the regular British troops who also participated in the campaign.
The Legion's mounted soldiers were particularly important because of their ability to move rapidly across the countryside, conduct reconnaissance, pursue enemy forces and support British infantry.
At the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781, the Legion participated in Tarleton's attack against the American forces commanded by Brigadier General Daniel Morgan.
The battle ended in a significant American victory, with the British suffering heavy casualties and substantial losses among their troops.
CWBL-07 adds another mounted soldier to the British Legion collection and can be combined with the other Tarleton's Raiders cavalry figures to create a larger formation for a Cowpens diorama.
