CWMLD-01A - American Militia Dragoon | John Jenkins Designs
This mounted American militia dragoon represents the volunteer horsemen who served alongside the Continental cavalry during the American War of Independence, particularly at the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781.
During the Southern Campaign, American commander Brigadier General Daniel Morgan faced the challenge of opposing the experienced cavalry of Banastre Tarleton's British Legion with comparatively limited mounted resources.
Additional militia horsemen were therefore equipped and organised to support Colonel William Washington's Continental Dragoons.
These mounted volunteers contributed to the American army's reconnaissance, security and battlefield mobility. Dragoons were valuable as scouts, mounted pickets and reserve troops, while their sabres provided an effective weapon for close combat.
The Battle of Cowpens became a significant American victory, with the combined efforts of Continental soldiers and militia playing an important role in overcoming the British attacking force.
CWMLD-01A is an individual mounted figure suitable for displaying with other American militia dragoons and the Third Continental Dragoons to recreate the cavalry component of Morgan's army.
