CWMLD-02B - American Militia Dragoon | John Jenkins Designs

This mounted militia dragoon represents the American volunteer cavalry who reinforced Brigadier General Daniel Morgan's mounted forces during the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781.

Morgan faced a considerable disadvantage in cavalry strength when confronting Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton and his experienced British Legion. To help address this imbalance, small groups of volunteer militiamen were equipped as mounted troops.

These militia dragoons supplemented the Continental cavalry commanded by Colonel William Washington and contributed to the American mounted force during the Southern Campaign.

Dragoons performed a wide range of military duties, including scouting, reconnaissance, mounted pickets, supporting infantry and pursuing withdrawing enemy troops. Their mobility made them particularly valuable in the rapidly changing circumstances of eighteenth-century warfare.

CWMLD-02B represents one of the individual militia dragoon variations within the Battle of Cowpens collection.

This mounted figure can be combined with CWMLD-02A, CWMLD-01A and CWMLD-01B to create a varied American cavalry formation alongside the regular Continental Dragoons.
