The image of the French Foreign Legion fighting on against overwhelming odds has become one of the enduring themes of military history and popular culture.
FFL080 – Drummer joins Thomas Gunn's Foreign Legion series as part of a group designed around a desperate defensive or last-stand scene.
Military musicians historically performed practical duties as well as ceremonial ones. Drum signals could communicate orders and regulate movement long before electronic communications transformed the battlefield.
Within a miniature display, however, the Drummer also provides valuable visual contrast. Surrounded by riflemen, casualties and the Gatling gun crew, he immediately stands out from the conventional combat poses.
He can be placed near the centre of a defensive position, beside an officer or among wounded Legionnaires to create a scene in which every available man is caught up in the action.
