By 13 January 1842, the retreating Kabul garrison had been reduced to a desperate remnant.

Near the village of Gandamak, survivors of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot made a final stand against Afghan forces in bitter winter conditions. The episode became one of the defining images of the disastrous 1842 retreat from Kabul.
