GAN-09 – 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Series – The Last Stand at Gandamak, 13th January 1842 – The 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot (#19 & #7) (4 pcs)
Few episodes in British military history are as haunting as the Last Stand at Gandamak. On 13 January 1842, during the disastrous retreat from Kabul in the First Anglo-Afghan War, the remnants of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot made their final stand on a snow-covered hill near the village of Gandamak. Surrounded by thousands of Afghan tribesmen and with little ammunition remaining, fewer than two dozen exhausted soldiers chose to fight to the last rather than surrender.
The stand became an enduring symbol of courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Although almost every soldier was killed, their determination entered military legend and inspired generations of historians, artists and collectors. The dramatic scene remains one of the defining moments of Britain's nineteenth-century campaigns.
This special 20th Anniversary Limited Edition beautifully recreates that unforgettable episode with four exceptionally sculpted figures depicting the desperate final moments of the defenders. Every pose conveys the exhaustion, courage and resolve of the soldiers, while the expertly applied winter uniforms and weathered equipment add remarkable realism. The expressive faces and dynamic composition transform the set into far more than a collection of miniatures—it becomes a powerful historical vignette.
At The Military Workshop, we are especially proud to offer limited editions that commemorate defining moments in military history. This remarkable set is a fitting tribute to the bravery of the men of the 44th Regiment and is certain to become one of the highlights of any Victorian military collection.
