GAN-14 – 44th Regiment of Foot | John Jenkins Designs

GAN-14 forms part of John Jenkins Designs’ 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Series and depicts a soldier of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot during the legendary Last Stand at Gandamak on 13 January 1842.

The action came at the end of the disastrous British retreat from Kabul. The remaining members of General Elphinstone’s force found themselves surrounded on a snow-covered hill near the village of Gandamak.

Only a handful of working muskets remained and ammunition was almost exhausted, yet the surviving soldiers refused demands to surrender.

After a period of sniping and repeated attacks, Afghan tribesmen eventually overwhelmed the position. Only a small number of men were taken alive, while most of the remaining defenders were killed.

GAN-14 captures one of the most dramatic and tragic episodes of the First Anglo-Afghan War and is a particularly significant release as part of the John Jenkins 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Series.
