GGFF-02 – Frontier Light Horse | John Jenkins Designs

GGFF-02 represents members of the Frontier Light Horse, one of the hard-fighting colonial mounted units that served during the Anglo-Zulu War.

Originally raised in 1877 by Lieutenant F. Carrington for service during the Ninth Cape Frontier War, the Frontier Light Horse drew many of its recruits from the Kingwilliamstown district of the Eastern Cape.

During the Anglo-Zulu War the unit served in Wood’s Column and fought at Hlobane, Khambula and Ulundi. It suffered serious losses at Hlobane, including the death of its commanding officer.

Two members of the Frontier Light Horse, Captain Cecil D’Arcy and Sergeant Edmund O’Toole, were later awarded the Victoria Cross for acts of bravery.

The unit was also notable for considerable variation in uniform and horse colour, reflecting the irregular nature of colonial mounted service.

Will be available from The Military Workshop.
