GGMI-05 – Mounted Infantry – Eshowe Relief Column

The vast distances and difficult terrain of southern Africa placed a premium on mobility. Mounted infantry provided soldiers who could travel rapidly on horseback before dismounting to fight with their rifles when required.

GGMI-05 represents this mobile element of the Eshowe Relief Column during the Anglo-Zulu War.

Mounted troops are particularly valuable in a large display because they introduce height and movement among predominantly foot-based infantry. They can scout ahead of the column, guard its flanks or be positioned near the wagons as the force advances through Zululand.
