GGNEW-01 – Newcastle Mounted Rifles, a finely detailed two-piece set from the Volunteers, Irregulars and Auxiliaries collection, available from The Military Workshop.
The Newcastle Mounted Rifles was a volunteer regiment raised in the northern districts of the Colony of Natal. Comprised of local settlers and experienced horsemen, the unit was valued for its mobility, marksmanship, and intimate knowledge of the rugged South African landscape. Like many colonial mounted units, its members provided vital reconnaissance, escorted supply columns, patrolled frontier regions, and acted as the eyes and ears of the British Army during the campaign.
Throughout the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, colonial volunteer units such as the Newcastle Mounted Rifles played an indispensable role alongside British regulars. Their ability to move rapidly across difficult terrain allowed them to gather intelligence, screen advancing forces, pursue enemy movements, and respond quickly to changing battlefield conditions.
Expertly sculpted and beautifully hand-painted, this two-figure set captures the distinctive appearance of these volunteer mounted riflemen, complete with historically inspired uniforms, weapons, and equipment. Their dynamic poses make them a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War display, whether scouting ahead of a British column or operating alongside other colonial and irregular forces.
GGNEW-01 – Newcastle Mounted Rifles is an excellent choice for collectors wishing to recreate the diverse mounted units that contributed so much to the British campaign in southern Africa.
