The Natal Native Horse (NNH) was an irregular mounted regiment raised from experienced African horsemen under European officers. Valued for their exceptional mobility, knowledge of the local terrain, and scouting abilities, the regiment played a vital role throughout the Anglo-Zulu War, undertaking reconnaissance, screening the main force, carrying messages, and pursuing enemy formations.

During the Battle of Gingindlovu on 2 April 1879, the Natal Native Horse formed part of Lord Chelmsford's Eshowe Relief Column. As the British force advanced to relieve the besieged garrison at Eshowe, the NNH helped protect the column and provided invaluable reconnaissance before and during the battle. Following the successful defence of the British laager and the defeat of the Zulu attack, mounted units such as the Natal Native Horse were instrumental in pursuing the retreating warriors and securing the battlefield.

Expertly sculpted and richly hand-painted, this two-figure set captures the distinctive appearance of these accomplished mounted troopers.
