GGZ-07 – Zulu Warriors | John Jenkins Designs
The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 brought the British Empire into conflict with the highly organised military system of the Zulu Kingdom, whose regiments were renowned for discipline, endurance and aggressive battlefield manoeuvre.
GGZ-07 – Zulu Warriors represents a group of Zulu fighting men from this campaign. Armed in the traditional manner with shields and close-combat weapons, such warriors formed part of the larger regimental system that could bring thousands of men onto the battlefield under experienced commanders.
Zulu tactics were based upon coordinated movement rather than individual action. The famous encircling method often described as the “horns of the buffalo” sought to hold an opponent in place with the centre while the flanking elements moved around the sides. At Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, a large Zulu force overwhelmed a substantial British camp in one of the most dramatic defeats suffered by a British army during the Victorian period.
For collectors, GGZ-07 is ideal for increasing the numbers needed to give a Zulu formation the sense of scale it deserves. Positioned with other advancing warriors, casualty figures and British infantry, the set can help recreate the speed, movement and intensity that characterised many engagements of the campaign.
