GLAD-04 – Secutor
The Secutor, meaning roughly “pursuer”, was developed as a heavily armed opponent particularly suited to facing the lightly equipped Retiarius.
His equipment typically included a large shield, sword and a distinctive smooth helmet with small eye openings. The streamlined helmet offered fewer projections for the Retiarius' net to catch upon – a practical adaptation to the specialised contest between the two gladiatorial types.
GLAD-04 – Secutor represents the armoured half of this famous arena pairing.
Placed opposite GLAD-03, the contrast is immediate: the mobile, lightly protected Retiarius with his trident and net against a more heavily defended swordsman attempting to close the distance.
This carefully balanced mismatch was part of the spectacle of Roman gladiatorial combat, where different equipment and fighting styles created recognisable contests for the crowd.
Available from The Military Workshop – an imposing John Jenkins Designs Secutor and the ideal adversary for recreating one of the Roman arena's classic gladiatorial match-ups.
